Tips on Managing Yourself

Have you ever had a boss or really anyone who you think is really bad at managing themselves or their business? How many times have you thought or said if I that was me, “Blah, blah, blah?” Truthfully, you were probably right to some extent.

Today, I kept brainstorming what to write about, and really just felt a little “off”. Since I really control my own schedule, I could’ve honestly not worked today or not wrote this blog post today because no one is telling me to do so. It sounds somewhat appealing to just not work on a Wednesday because I don’t want to…. but that is a terrifying type of freedom. I clearly, chose to work because you’re reading this and in deciding to do so it inspired this post.

I believe that managing yourself is one of the absolute hardest things to do in life…. this can be in any area of your life, but have you ever noticed you know what you should do, and sometimes just choose not to do it? I really hope I’m not the only one who does that. (HAHAHA!) Here are some of my tips on managing yourself.

Know what your goal is. Seriously, know what your goal is even if it for the day. It really doesn’t have to be remarkable, but if you have a goal, by writing it down it can be much easier to stay on track or get motivated throughout the day. For example, I write my goals/tasks down at the beginning of the day and break them out into personal and professional. I rarely get all of them done, but I do the most important or the hardest as soon as I can.

Understand how long something with take.
Some of the things we dislike the most in like really only take 20 minutes. I am referring to myself and putting away laundry. If you’ve followed me for a while, you know that I am the WORST at putting laundry away, even though it is a relatively quick task.

Discipline. I don’t think discipline is talked about nearly enough. You have to have self- discipline in all areas of life. Whether it is fitness, your career, your relationships, or whatever it maybe that you are trying to achieve you have to have discipline. I really wish this is something I would’ve learned sooner. I quit so many things or gave up on so many ideas because I didn’t have the discipline to complete them or push through the times I wasn’t motivated. Truthfully, I am motivated maybe two days a week so how do I get anything accomplished? Discipline. Discipline has allowed me to build a business and create an active lifestyle. I used to hate going to the gym, but I went anyway…. not every day is your best, but showing up is 80% of the work.

Perspective So much of life is just how we look at it. A great example of this is I was recently in a group message with someone who comes off very dry with no personality which can sometimes be interpreted as rude when they are aren’t. I learned a few years ago when my life became more public, to always assume positive intent. I know that’s not easy to do, but I am so grateful I learned that because even in the tiniest ways it can improve your attitude.

Know your ‘Why’. This is the key to anything. If you can’t answer why you’re doing something, then you might need to reevaluate why you’re doing it in the first place. Even if this is going to work and you only kind of like your job…. ask yourself why? Likely, this is because you need a paycheck, and that’s a why, but take it further, what does a paycheck allow you to do? How does it allow you to live? Those are key elements to know when you’re managing yourself.

I still struggle with managing myself sometimes, like today for example, so I hope some of these tips help you like they help me. If you have any secret tips on managing yourself, I’d love to know!

As always thank you for reading!
